Hywel Roberts
Hywel Roberts is a graduate of Leeds University where he studied English, Drama and Film.
On completing his PGCE he taught in Drama and English in Wakefield. In 1996 he moved to The Kingstone School in Barnsley, South Yorkshire in order to set up a Drama department. In 2001, Hywel co-wrote the bid for the school to become a Specialist College in the Performing Arts.
Hywel became an Advanced Skills Teacher in 2005 which offered the opportunity to work with professionals from across all areas of education. In 2007, Kingstone School became a School of Creativity and Hywel was central to the development of this initiative. He managed the development of the school’s Creative Partnerships project and this culminated in a Conference of Creativity during the summer of 2009.
Hywel left Kingstone in August 2009 to pursue a freelance career but he maintains firm links with the school and its development as a creative centre for excellence.
He is now a AST consultant specialising in Drama, creative classroom practice, emerging pedagogies, coaching and teacher development. He is a lead practitioner for the Mantle of the Expert process and has introduced this way of working to many teachers across all phases of learning.
His work with schools and with LAs has demonstrated versatility and diversity from supporting NQTs to supporting Heads with the development of their learning communities. All the work he undertakes has one objective: to offer a rich learning experience for the client through which they can recognise their own potential.
Hywel is a visiting practitioner to the Bloomsbury Theatre, London and Manchester Metropolitan University. He is also on the National Executive for the National Association of Teachers of Drama.
