Building Bridges - The Transitional Learning to Learn Approach

Building Bridges is a Learning to Learn approach designed to be used either as a transition module for L2 or as an introduction to Learning to Learn. It consists of 36 lessons each of 45 minutes. BB is very accessible and has a low reading age.

BB is provided in a similar format to L2 with an introductory teacher manual; electronic resources for every lesson; simplified learner mats for team problem solving, coaching and peer assessment; achievement posters and learner journals for each student (with competency passport).

BB has been organised around what we, and the schools we worked with, identified as the key knowledge, skills and attributes for their pupils. We broke these down into topic areas and provide three lessons for each topic. The structure of the programme looks like this:

Knowledge

  • Choosing a learning lifestyle
  • What helps and what hinders my learning?
  • Meet my ‘inner learner'
  • Making it happen

Attributes

  • Staying positive
  • Sticking at it
  • Knowing my strengths and weaknesses
  • Keeping friends

Skills

  • How to ask really good questions
  • How to find out the facts
  • Taking notes to suit
  • Learning through ‘feedback'

Building Bridges encourages the philosophy of learning developed in L2 . Pupils learn in a variety of groupings and through problem-solving challenges. Lots of emphasis is placed on small group presentations and on de-briefing the learning processes used. Every lesson has a range of original electronic resources and is designed in the 4 stage cycle. Using the Primary version of PlanEasy2, each BB lesson can be tracked for the 5 Rs, VAK, multiple intelligences, thinking skills and assessment for learning.
